DIE VÖGEL
Filmmakers’ Choir.
Once again this year, we would like to send you our best wishes and Christmas greetings by drawing your attention to a contribution from the world of art and culture that is very close to our hearts: the film choir “Die Vögel”, a unique collective of film professionals dedicated to a cappella film music.
Anyone who imagines “Die Vögel” as a choir of harmless little songbirds is mistaken.
Not only are they named after Alfred Hitchcock’s horror classic The Birds – they are also made up exclusively of filmmakers. Yes, really: actors, directors, editors and sound engineers sing side by side, creating a soundscape that is as surprising as their professional background.

The film choir “The Birds” was founded in Munich in 2016 by director Eileen Byrne (Director of Marianengraben and co-initiator of the movement Angst essen Kino auf) together with her fellow directors Mirjam Orthen and Pauline Roenneberg. Their idea was to bring film professionals together through a shared passion for music – and, in doing so, to create an open and vibrant network within the film industry.
Since 2021, the choir has also existed in Berlin, where it is currently led by singer and arranger Lilli Born, who is also active in her own music projects and with the Berliner Kneipenchor.

A choir from the industry – for the industry
The Birds perform in places as diverse as their members: in cinemas, on film stages, in bars – or simply out on the street. Most importantly, they sing where their roots lie: at film festivals, film premieres and even at cinema releases of films made by their own members.

Their repertoire reflects the full range of film music culture: from “Tatort” and the hypnotic White Lotus theme to epic series moments such as Game of Thrones. Atmospheric classics like the Dark theme sit alongside humorous pieces such as The Muppet Show or Bert & Ernie, energetic cult titles like “Eye of the Tiger”, pop-cultural references such as “Barbie & Ken”, and the iconic, ethereal “Nightcall” from Drive.
All a cappella. All specially arranged. And all performed with an energy that instantly connects with the audience.
Whether opening a short film programme, setting the tone at a premiere or surprising audiences in a cinema foyer, The Birds bring film music back to where it belongs: into the world of film itself.
